Catalogue of Relic Lists: Before 1300
Interpreting ListIDs

This page catalogues basic metadata for all known relic lists with a close connection to medieval English ecclesiastical history. It was initially based on ‘Appendix I: A Catalogue of Relic-Lists from English Religious Houses’, cataloguing initially done by I. G. Thomas in his dissertation ‘The Cult of Saints’ Relics in Medieval England’ (University of London, 1974, 341–350). Relic lists are organised alphabetically by listID, the first part of which is the msID; the msID is based on monastic house or locale. See Interpreting ListIDs for more information about listIDs, correspondence, and sigla. This list is also indebted to Julian Luxford’s ‘The Nature and Purpose of Medieval Relic Lists’, in Saints and Cults in Medieval England: Proceedings of the 2015 Harlaxton Symposium (2017), 58–79. Please note that the tabular catalogues are continually updated, refined, and extended as my own work continues. If you are looking for a list or list-like text, such as a resting-place list, and cannot find it here, try Relic List-Adjacent Texts; some of Thomas' sources are not considered a relic list under Loca Sanctorum's definition and can be found at there as well. I attempt to provide links to manuscripts and printed editions, but it has not always been possible to link directly to the appropriate page. A link to the relevant web catalogue page may be provided if no manuscript digitisation is freely available. If I have finished an alpha version of a text’s web edition, the listID will appear as a link; click it to be directed straight to the web edition. For further discussion or notes on manuscript context, dating, etc., click the corresponding '📝' under the MS Notes column. Clicking [Link] will open bibliographical URLs. The catalogue uses a simplified ‘Chicago-lite’ style; a full-entry Bibliography to this page will be coming soon.
